Regional Notes

Hollyhock weevil larvae tunnel through hollyhock stems and roots, causing wilting and collapse of affected plants despite apparent adequate moisture. The small weevils are difficult to spot, but their damage to the plant crown and below-ground tissues is unmistakable. You notice stunted growth, branch wilting, or complete plant collapse starting in spring. Early season inspection of stems may reveal entry holes or frass.

Remove and destroy infested plants as soon as wilting is noticed. Do not compost affected material. For recurring populations, apply spinosad as preventative soil drench around new plantings in spring. Avoid planting hollyhocks in the same location consecutively. Monitor stems weekly during spring for early signs and treat immediately if weevils are detected.
