You will observe brown, wilted leaf tips on young maple branches with internodal damage beginning in July and extending through August. Mature larvae are pale with dark brown heads and yellow-brown thoracic shields. Adult moths emerge in summer and lay eggs on branch tips. Damaged terminals fail to extend normally, altering tree form. Young ornamental maples in nursery production suffer most aesthetic impact.
Remove tip-infested branches early in the season to prevent larvae from reaching pupal sites. Time applications for late July when larvae are still feeding in terminals. Dormant sprays in fall can reduce the following year growth of adult emergence. Cultural controls include pruning and maintaining vigor.
