Woods weevil (Cylindrocopturus furnissi) larvae tunnel into Douglas-fir and spruce wood, creating galleries and emergence holes that weaken structural wood. Adult weevils are small, dark beetles that emerge in summer. This wood-boring pest affects lumber, structural timber, and occasionally landscape trees in western Washington and the Pacific Northwest.
Remove heavily infested logs and timber from the landscape to eliminate breeding habitat. Proper debarking and drying of firewood prevents weevil establishment. For infested landscaping trees, prune out dead or dying wood harboring weevil populations. No pesticide control is practical for wood-boring weevils; focus on sanitation and removal of breeding sites.
