Anise hyssop is an upright, aromatic perennial in the mint family, reaching two to four feet tall with dense spikes of tubular flowers attractive to bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. The foliage carries a distinct anise scent when bruised. Native to central and eastern North America.

Give it full sun and well-drained soil for best performance. Drought-tolerant once established. Avoid wet, heavy soils in winter, which can cause root rot. Short-lived but self-seeds readily in favorable conditions.
