Japanese Anemone blooms in late summer and early fall when most perennials are winding down, producing elegant single or double flowers in white or pink on wiry stems 3 to 4 feet tall. It fills that awkward gap between summer perennials and fall foliage. Once established, it spreads by rhizomes to form substantial colonies.
Partial shade to full sun in rich, moist soil. It can be slow to establish in the first year or two but becomes vigorous once its roots are set. The spreading habit can be aggressive in ideal conditions, so site it where you want it to colonize. Cut back after frost. Slugs target the emerging foliage in spring.
