Maidenhair spleenwort is a small, delicate evergreen fern with wiry black stems (stipes) bearing tiny, round leaflets in neat rows. Native across the Northern Hemisphere, it grows in rock crevices, walls, and shaded cliff faces, rarely exceeding eight inches tall. The compact, tufted habit and dark stems create fine-textured detail.

Grow in partial to full shade in moist, well-drained, slightly alkaline soil. Excellent for rock gardens, stone walls, and crevice plantings. Requires sharp drainage; does not tolerate waterlogged conditions. Few pest or disease issues. Slow-growing but long-lived once established in an appropriate site.
