Japanese painted fern is a deciduous fern prized for its metallic silver, gray, and burgundy frond coloring, unlike any other hardy fern. Native to eastern Asia, it forms low, spreading clumps eight to eighteen inches tall. The cultivar 'Pictum' (sometimes sold as 'Metallicum') is the standard selection, with silver-gray fronds highlighted by deep wine-red midribs.

Grow in partial to full shade in moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil. The silver coloring shows best in bright indirect light; deep shade reduces the metallic effect. Pairs dramatically with dark-leaved plants like heuchera or black mondo grass. Spreads slowly. Hardy to Zone 3. Few pest or disease issues.
