Mahonia x media (Berberidaceae) is a hybrid between M. lomariifolia and M. japonica, producing large, architectural evergreen shrubs with bold pinnate foliage. Long, upright to spreading racemes of fragrant yellow flowers appear in late autumn to winter, bridging the gap between fall and spring bloom seasons.

Hybrid mahonia tolerates renovation pruning (removing 90 to 95 percent of growth) and recovers well from a cane-like habit. Key cultivars include 'Charity' (upright, long racemes), 'Winter Sun' (spreading racemes), and 'Arthur Menzies' (vigorous, upright).
