Shrub

Notholithocarpus densiflorus var. echinoides

Fabaceae · broadleaf · native

Shrub tanoak is a compact, dwarf form of the full-size tree, rarely exceeding 10 feet in height. You will recognize it by its densely branched habit and smaller, less heavily toothed leathery leaves that closely resemble those of the larger tanoak. The form occurs naturally in exposed chaparral and mountain communities of the Klamath region, where it has evolved to withstand rocky, mineral-sparse

Use shrub tanoak in mixed borders or as a specimen in gardens where space is limited. It prefers part shade to full sun on well-drained, acidic soil; once established, it exhibits moderate drought tolerance. Like its larger relative, it is susceptible to sudden oak death; monitor for symptoms and ensure good air circulation to reduce humidity that encourages disease pressure.
