Pennisetum alopecuroides (Poaceae) is a clumping ornamental grass native to eastern Asia and western Australia. It grows 2 to 4 feet tall and wide, forming a dense, arching mound of narrow green foliage. Bottlebrush-like flower spikes in shades of burgundy, pink, or cream appear from midsummer into fall and persist through winter.

Fountain grass performs best in full sun on well-drained soil with moderate moisture. It is heat and drought tolerant once established. No significant pest or disease problems are documented. The species self-seeds in warm climates but is generally well-behaved in cooler zones. Hardy in Zones 5a to 9b.
