Prunus domestica (Rosaceae) is a deciduous fruit tree of hybrid origin, probably derived from crosses in the southern Caucasus. It grows 20 to 30 feet tall with a rounded to spreading crown. White flowers appear in midspring, followed by the familiar plum fruit in a range of sizes, colors (blue, purple, red, yellow, green), and flavors.

Common plum grows in full sun on well-drained, fertile soil. European plum types are generally more cold-hardy and self-fertile than Japanese plums (P. salicina). Brown rot, black knot, and plum curculio are the most significant problems. Many cultivars require chilling hours that vary by selection. Hardy in Zones 5a to 8b.
