Sitka willow is a highly variable species native to northwestern North America from Alaska to northern California to Montana. It takes the form of a bushy shrub or erect tree up to 8 meters tall, with lance-shaped to oval leaves up to 12 cm long that are often smooth-edged or toothed, with rolled-under edges. The undersides are hairy to woolly and upper surfaces are dark green and mostly hairless.

This willow is abundant in coastal and inland wetland habitats including marshes, riverbanks, swamps, coastal sand dunes, and mountain springs. It is listed as IUCN Least Concern and widely distributed across its native range.
