Himalayan sarcococca or sweet box is an evergreen shrub native to the Himalayan region, reaching 5-7 feet tall with narrow, glossy, dark green leaves. The plant produces delicate, highly fragrant white flowers in midwinter followed by red berries that mature to black.
This species prefers partial to full shade and well-drained, humus-rich soil and is hardy to zones 6b-9a. It is slow-growing and compact, making it useful for shaded borders, foundations, and woodland gardens. The fragrant winter flowers are a major ornamental asset; the plant requires minimal maintenance.
