Fragrant sarcococca is a compact evergreen shrub in the boxwood family native to China, reaching 3-5 feet tall with linear to lance-shaped, dark green leaves. The plant produces intensely fragrant white flowers in winter followed by glossy black berries.

This species thrives in partial to full shade with well-drained, humus-rich soil and is hardy to zones 6b-9a. It is slow-growing and exceptionally shade-tolerant, making it ideal for deep woodland conditions where few other shrubs thrive. The winter fragrance and winter-to-spring interest make it a valued ornamental.
