Roundleaf Snowberry
Symphoricarpos rotondifolius
Caprifoliaceae · broadleaf · native
Roundleaf snowberry is a deciduous shrub reaching 2-4 feet, with brown fuzzy twigs that age to gray and shredded appearance. The opposite, simple, oval to elliptic leaves (0.6-1.9 cm) are soft, hairy, and dull grayish-green, becoming paler below. Small, delicate white to pink or rose tube-like flowers appear in spring; these develop into pure white, ovoid berries that persist into winter.
Roundleaf snowberry adapts to sun and light shade on well-drained, rocky or sandy soils. Once established, it is very drought tolerant and extremely long-lived. The white winter berries are striking ornamentally and attract birds. The plant is rarely afflicted with pests or disease and requires minimal maintenance.
