Field elm (smoothleaf elm) is a deciduous tree from Europe, central Asia, and Africa reaching 70-90 ft. It has an ascending, oval, or pyramidal form with rough, block-patterned bark and gold-yellow fall color. Winter flowers are inconspicuous.

Field elm is hardy in zones 5a-7b and prefers full sun with moist to well-drained soil (pH 6.0-8.0). Growth is rapid with variable tolerances for drought, pollution, salt, and wet soil. It blooms in winter with separate male and female flowers on the same tree.
