Northern inside-out flower (American barrenwort) is a native broadleaf perennial from the coastal ranges of Oregon, adjacent portions of Washington state, and northern California. It produces upright clusters of 25-30 small white reflexed petals from May to July.

This native requires full shade and thrives in cool, moist woodland conditions in zones 6a-8b. It is low-maintenance and useful as a groundcover for naturalization in shaded forest gardens. It spreads slowly via rhizomes.
