Pine needle sheathminer

You will see tan or brown needles drooping or projecting at sharp angles from pine terminals in summer. Needles slip easily from sheaths with gentle pulling. Orange larvae tunnel inside needles, then feed within the sheath base. The damage appears primarily on smaller tree specimens. Two and three-needle pines including lodgepole and western white pine are susceptible hosts.
This pest causes primarily cosmetic damage and requires no control for tree health. Remove objectionable branches showing heavy infestation. Maintain tree vigor through proper irrigation and care. Natural parasitoid wasps attack larvae. Small ornamental plantings benefit from pruning affected shoots. Avoid unnecessary pesticide applications. Most pines outgrow minor sheathminer damage.
