Bosnian Pine

Pinus leucodermis

Pinaceae · conifer · introduced

Bosnian pine is the tough, compact European mountain pine that forms a dense, narrow, dark green pyramid, one of the most handsome and well-behaved pines for residential landscapes. The needles are stiff, dark green, and held in pairs, and the overall texture is finer and more formal than most landscape pines. Young cones are an unusual dark violet-blue, adding an unexpected color accent. Native to the mountains of the western Balkans, it grows forty to sixty feet but maintains a relatively narrow spread.

In Western Washington, Bosnian pine is one of the most reliable ornamental pines for urban and residential sites. It tolerates heat, drought, poor soil, and urban conditions with the toughness of its mountain heritage. The dense, formal form requires no corrective pruning. No significant disease or pest concerns are tracked, a notable advantage over many other landscape pines. For a medium-sized, well-shaped evergreen with dark green year-round color and minimal maintenance, Bosnian pine is an excellent choice for properties that need a vertical evergreen presence without the size of a Sitka spruce or Douglas fir.
