Woolly pine needle aphid

Woolly pine needle aphids are covered with white, cottony wax coating, appearing as small white tufts clustered on pine needles. You will see yellowing of affected foliage and honeydew production leading to sooty mold development. Pinus species in western Washington mountains experience infestations, particularly on lodgepole and whitebark pine. Damage is primarily cosmetic.
Prune lightly infested branches and discard material away from other pines. Spray horticultural oil in late fall or early spring to coat and smother overwintering aphids. High-pressure water spray dislodges aphids from needles. Do not over-fertilize. Most young trees tolerate minor infestations; mature trees show negligible damage.

Cultural Controls
- biological control Many parasites and predators attack aphid.
- Monitor the proportion of aphid mummies to unparasitized adults and the number of predators such as lady beetles.
- If the biocontrol agents appear to be gaining control, avoid sprays which would disrupt this system.
- Most products available for aphid control are highly disruptive of natural enemies.
- Management-cultural control Aphid populations tend to be higher in plants that are fertilized liberally with nitrogen.
- Prune out suckers...
