Rose leaf-rolling sawfly causes rose leaflets to roll into tubes within 24 hours of egg insertion into the leaf base; this occurs from late April through early June on western roses. Pale green larvae feed inside the rolled leaves. Leaf rolling is triggered by chemicals secreted during female oviposition. Other sawfly types cause different damage patterns.
Pick off affected leaves before larvae complete feeding if only a few are involved. Roses typically recover from damage. No chemical control usually needed; the plants' natural regrowth makes this mostly cosmetic. Parasitoid wasps provide adequate biological control when pesticides are avoided.
